LONDON, UK — Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82. The news of his passing was confirmed this afternoon by his family and official spokesperson, Garba Shehu.
According to a public statement shared on social media, the former leader died peacefully in a London clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025. The announcement reads:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, a retired Major General, held a significant place in Nigeria’s political history. He served as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and returned decades later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
