In a dramatic display of international cybercrime enforcement, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has filed a civil forfeiture complaint against a Lagos-based suspect, Ehiremen Aigbokhan, for allegedly defrauding a U.S. political donor of over ₦460 million in cryptocurrency. The stolen funds were reportedly intended as a donation to support the inauguration of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2025 campaign efforts.
According to filings made public on July 2, 2025, by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Aigbokhan orchestrated a Business Email Compromise (BEC) scheme that targeted an unnamed donor to the “Trump–Vance Inaugural Committee.” Investigators say that on December 26, 2024, Aigbokhan sent a fraudulent email impersonating a co-chair of the committee using a cleverly disguised domain—@t47lnaugural.com instead of the official @t47inaugural.com. The email convinced the victim to transfer 250,300 USDT.ETH (a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar) to what they believed was an official committee wallet.
What followed was a sophisticated laundering operation. The cryptocurrency was rapidly moved across multiple wallets in an attempt to obscure the origin of the funds. However, blockchain forensic analysts, in collaboration with the FBI, traced the transfers to a Binance account linked to Aigbokhan. Crucially, IP address logs from the account pointed to activity originating from Lagos, Nigeria.
The U.S. government, working with cryptocurrency companies such as Tether and Binance, managed to freeze approximately 40,353 USDT.ETH—roughly $40,300—which remained unlaundered in the process. These funds are now the subject of a civil forfeiture case filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, as the DOJ seeks to recover and retain the proceeds of the fraud.
This case forms part of a larger initiative by the DOJ to clamp down on global cryptocurrency-based scams. Just weeks before, the DOJ had announced the largest seizure of cryptocurrency related to online scams in U.S. history, totaling more than $225 million. Aigbokhan’s case stands out not just for the political relevance of the target but for the brazen use of real-world events to lure victims into crypto fraud.
