The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has ordered a sweeping probe into allegations that jobs in the Green Chamber were handed out unfairly.
The move follows growing murmurs that recent recruitment into the National Assembly may have been marred by favoritism, secrecy, and a disregard for due process.
Whispers from within the Assembly suggest that employment slots were quietly shared among a privileged few, shutting out thousands of qualified Nigerians.
Critics say the process mocked the principles of merit and federal character, and further deepened public mistrust in Nigeria’s legislative institution.
Speaker Abbas, clearly aware of the storm brewing, directed an immediate investigation.
Meanwhile, his order is being read as a test of his commitment to transparency and accountability, as he has previously vowed to clean up questionable practices in government employment.

Abbas is no stranger to this fight. In 2023, he spearheaded an inquiry into job racketeering across federal ministries and agencies. Just earlier this year, he also called for reforms to ensure that top positions in the National Assembly are filled strictly on merit, not political bargaining.
With this latest order, Abbas appears to be making a statement that the era of backdoor deals in legislative recruitment must end.
But whether this probe delivers punishment for offenders or fizzles out like past inquiries will determine if Nigerians take the promise of reform seriously.
For now, the Speaker has lit the match. The real question is whether the fire will burn through entrenched interests or be quietly put out in the corridors of power.
