A former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Haliru Dantsoho, has cautioned against calls to zone the party’s governorship ticket to Kwara North, warning that such a move could undermine APC’s chances in the 2027 general elections.
Dantsoho made the remark during an appearance on the TVC programme Beyond the Headlines, where he addressed internal party dynamics and his earlier decision to withdraw from the governorship race in favour of a candidate from Kwara Central.
Speaking on the zoning debate gaining traction within political circles in the state, Dantsoho argued that electoral success should take precedence over regional considerations. He maintained that “politics is about numbers,” stressing that winning elections requires strategic alignment rather than strict adherence to zoning arrangements.
According to him, imposing the governorship ticket on Kwara North could weaken the APC’s overall electoral strength in the state, potentially costing the party victory at the polls if the decision does not reflect broader voter realities.
He further explained that his withdrawal from the race in the previous cycle was guided by party unity and support for a candidate from Kwara Central, which he believed was a more viable path at the time.
Dantsoho’s comments add to the ongoing conversation within Kwara APC over zoning, succession planning, and how best to balance equity with electability ahead of 2027.
