NiMet Predicts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall, and Flash Flood Risk Across Nigeria from Oct 6–8

Posted on October 6, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on NiMet Predicts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall, and Flash Flood Risk Across Nigeria from Oct 6–8

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather outlook warning of thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall over wide swathes of the country from Monday to Wednesday, with a heightened risk of flash floods in parts of the North and Central regions.

NiMet’s forecast indicates that Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina states are likely to experience morning thunderstorms and rainfall on Monday. Later in the day, precipitation is expected to extend to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states.

The agency cautioned that flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano during the forecast period, especially in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage.

On Tuesday, the northern skies may clear somewhat, with patches of sunshine, though thunderstorms and showers are expected to persist in Adamawa, Taraba and adjacent states.

By Wednesday, the pattern returns: sunny mornings followed by storms in the afternoon across many northern states.

In the North-Central and Central zones, NiMet forecasts morning cloudiness with possible rainfall over Niger, Benue, the FCT (Abuja), Plateau, and Nasarawa states. Later in the day, these areas may experience light to moderate rains.

Of particular note is Plateau State, which is flagged as having a higher risk of flooding because of its terrain and existing drainage challenges.

Wednesday’s forecast calls for cloudy conditions and moderate rainfall over the central states.

Although not under as intense a threat as the North and Central regions, the South is expected to see light to moderate rains from Monday onward.

States likely to be affected include Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

The rainfall aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing wet season, and the pattern may persist through Wednesday, especially in coastal and forested areas.

NiMet has therefore urged caution and readiness in flood-prone communities, emphasizing that the rainfall could disrupt traffic, inundate roads, and damage property.

Key recommendations include:

Avoid driving or walking through flooded or waterlogged roads.

Use flood-resistant evacuation routes in vulnerable areas.

Secure loose objects and roof canopies to prevent wind damage.

Stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid standing near windows

Disconnect electrical appliances when storms approach.

Refrain from taking shelter under isolated trees during thunderstorms.

Keep abreast of local weather updates via NiMet’s platforms.

NiMet also advised airline operators, local governments, and emergency agencies to monitor region-specific weather bulletins for operational and strategic planning.
