Suspected Terrorists Kidnap Four Travellers on Kwara Highway Amid Fresh Niger Killings

Posted on January 6, 2026January 6, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Suspected Terrorists Kidnap Four Travellers on Kwara Highway Amid Fresh Niger Killings

Suspected terrorists have ambushed travellers on a major highway in Kwara State, kidnapping at least four people in the early hours of Monday, January 5, 2026. The attack occurred on the busy Isanlu–Isin–Omu Aran road, a key transportation route linking communities in Kwara South to the state capital, Ilorin, leaving motorists shaken and security concerns heightened across the region.

Eyewitnesses and local sources report that armed men, believed to be terrorists or bandits, blocked the highway shortly after dawn, forcing vehicles to stop before selecting and abducting several travellers. The victims were reportedly marched into nearby forests and taken to an unknown location, intensifying fears among residents and commuters who regularly use the road for business and personal travel.

The Kwara State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement confirming the incident or detailing efforts to rescue the abducted passengers, leaving families and local communities anxious for updates and assurances of safety. Security analysts say the lack of immediate confirmation reflects broader communication gaps between law enforcement and the public in the face of rising insecurity.

This latest abduction adds to an alarming pattern of violent attacks in North-Central Nigeria, where multiple kidnapping incidents and terror-linked violence have been recorded in recent months. Kwara State alone has seen high-profile security breaches, including a November 2025 assault on a church congregation in Eruku that resulted in deaths and mass abductions.

The highway attack follows closely on the heels of a brutal assault in neighbouring Niger State, where suspected terrorists killed more than 40 residents in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas over the weekend. The rampage left homes, markets, and lives shattered, forcing scores of villagers to flee from their ancestral communities in search of safety.

In the Niger State incidents, gunmen stormed the Kasuwan-Daji market and surrounding villages, firing on civilians, torching property and looting shops before withdrawing into nearby forests. Local church officials and community leaders confirmed that women, men, and children were among those killed and abducted, compounding the humanitarian toll of the violence.

Local authorities and security stakeholders in Niger State have condemned the attacks as “barbaric” and “inhuman,” urging robust government action to stem the escalating cycle of terror. The All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman and other political figures expressed solidarity with victims while calling for intensified military and police operations to apprehend the perpetrators.

Residents of both Kwara and Niger States are now calling on federal and state governments to strengthen surveillance, deploy additional security personnel along highways and rural routes, and improve coordination between intelligence units and local communities to prevent further abductions. Many travellers have already begun avoiding certain roads, affecting commerce and daily life in the impacted regions.

Security experts warn that unless comprehensive strategies are enacted including community-based intelligence sharing, targeted military offensives, and sustained police visibility, the pattern of violence and abductions could continue to threaten stability not only in Kwara and Niger States but across central and northern Nigeria.

As families await news of the kidnapped travellers and mourn those lost in Niger State, the broader population remains on edge, pleading for decisive action to restore safety on highways and in villages alike. With no clear indication yet of who carried out the latest attack or their motives, the wave of insecurity poses a stark reminder of the persistent threat facing Nigerians in vulnerable regions.
