PayPal Finally Enables Inbound Payments for Nigerians via Paga

Posted on January 27, 2026January 27, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on PayPal Finally Enables Inbound Payments for Nigerians via Paga

After nearly 20 years of limited operations in Nigeria, global payments giant PayPal has taken a major step into the country’s fintech space by partnering with Nigerian digital payments and company Paga to enable inbound international payments for Nigerians. The development marks the first time PayPal users in Nigeria can legally and directly receive funds from abroad and settle them locally in naira through an approved financial channel.

For years, PayPal’s services in Nigeria were largely restricted to outbound transactions, allowing Nigerians to make payments to foreign merchants but not receive money from overseas clients. This limitation forced freelancers, online merchants, content creators and small businesses to rely on alternative platforms or complex workarounds to get paid for international services. The new partnership with Paga effectively ends that long-standing restriction.

Under the integration, Nigerian users can now link their PayPal accounts to Paga wallets and receive international payments from PayPal’s global network, which spans over 200 countries and hundreds of millions of users worldwide. Once received, the funds can be settled in naira and accessed through Paga’s digital platform for withdrawals, transfers, bill payments and everyday transactions.

The partnership also allows Nigerian merchants and businesses to accept cross-border payments more easily, opening the door to global customers and foreign revenue streams. By providing a regulated local settlement option, the collaboration strengthens trust and transparency in cross-border digital payments, especially for small and medium-scale enterprises operating online.

Paga’s role in the deal is central, as the fintech company brings its established local infrastructure, regulatory approvals and nationwide reach to the partnership. With millions of users and a strong presence in Nigeria’s digital payments ecosystem, Paga serves as the bridge between PayPal’s global network and Nigeria’s domestic financial system.

Industry analysts say the move reflects Nigeria’s growing importance in Africa’s digital economy, driven by a young population, rising internet penetration and an expanding gig and e-commerce sector. The country’s fintech industry has matured significantly in recent years, making it more attractive for global payment platforms seeking compliant local partners.

The development is also expected to boost foreign inflows into Nigeria’s formal financial system, particularly from freelancers, remote workers and digital entrepreneurs earning in foreign currencies. By allowing funds to be converted and settled locally, the partnership could reduce dependence on informal channels and improve financial inclusion.

PayPal’s return to expanded operations in Nigeria aligns with its broader strategy of working with local wallets and fintech firms across emerging markets to overcome regulatory and operational barriers. Rather than operating in isolation, the company is increasingly relying on trusted regional partners to scale services responsibly.

For Nigerian users, the announcement has been widely welcomed as a long-awaited breakthrough, especially among freelancers and online sellers who have long campaigned for full PayPal access. Many see it as a sign that Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem has reached a level of maturity capable of supporting global platforms.

As the rollout continues, both companies are expected to refine the service, expand merchant acceptance and introduce additional features. The PayPal-Paga partnership is widely viewed as a turning point that could reshape how Nigerians participate in global digital commerce after decades on the margins.
