Former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Taofeek Arapaja, is reportedly preparing to part ways with Governor Seyi Makinde’s political camp, following high-level consultations with prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a development that could reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Arapaja, who currently serves as the National Deputy Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is said to have intensified discussions with APC stakeholders after a series of meetings linked to his reported dissatisfaction with developments within the PDP in Oyo State. According to reports, the former deputy governor recently met with key APC figures, including the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, as consultations over a possible defection gathered momentum.
Sources familiar with the situation alleged that Arapaja’s relationship with Governor Makinde deteriorated following the PDP governorship primary, with claims that he and his political loyalists became increasingly sidelined in the party’s power structure. The sources also claimed that appointments and political opportunities previously associated with his camp had diminished, fueling speculation about his next political move.
The reports further indicate that Arapaja may resign from his current party leadership position before making any formal announcement regarding his political future. However, neither Arapaja nor the PDP has officially confirmed the reported defection as of the time of filing this report.
Political observers believe that any eventual move by Arapaja to the APC would represent one of the most significant political realignments in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections, given his longstanding influence within the PDP and his role in the state’s political history.
The development comes as political parties across Oyo State continue strategic consultations and coalition-building in preparation for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 governorship election.
