The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed reports of a bandit invasion in Oke-Oyi, describing the claims as false and misleading, while warning that those responsible for spreading the alarm will face prosecution.
The clarification followed widespread panic in Oke-Oyi and surrounding communities after rumours emerged that suspected bandits had invaded Government Girls Secondary School in the area.
According to the Police Command, the incident occurred at about 9:15 a.m. on Thursday when reports of panic and confusion around the school reached security authorities. In response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Oke-Oyi Division immediately deployed officers to the scene to assess the situation and ensure the safety of students, staff, and residents.
Investigations revealed that the alarm originated from a woman who reportedly ran into the school premises claiming that bandits had entered the community. The claim quickly spread, causing fear among students and teachers and temporarily disrupting academic activities.
However, police authorities said a thorough assessment of the situation found no evidence whatsoever to support the claim.
“The report was entirely false and without any factual basis. There was no bandit attack, no sighting of bandits, and no security breach within the school, Oke-Oyi community, or any part of Kwara State,” the Command stated.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, condemned the circulation of false security alerts, noting that such misinformation has the potential to create unnecessary panic and public disorder.
He warned that the spread of unverified security information could undermine public confidence and divert security resources away from genuine emergencies.
The police commissioner further disclosed that efforts have commenced to identify the individual responsible for raising the false alarm. He stated that once identified, the person would be questioned and prosecuted in line with relevant laws governing the dissemination of false information and actions capable of breaching public peace.
The Command urged residents to remain calm and vigilant while avoiding the spread of rumours. It also encouraged members of the public to verify security-related information through official channels and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state, the Kwara State Police Command assured residents that adequate measures remain in place to safeguard lives and property.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command.
