Fleetwood Town Stun Arsenal in Historic Carabao Cup Upset, Win 5-3 on Penalties

Fourth-Tier Side Dump Reigning Premier League Champions Out After Dramatic 1-1 Draw

Arsenal suffered a stunning Carabao Cup exit on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, after fourth-tier Fleetwood Town defeated the reigning Premier League champions 5-3 in a penalty shootout following a fiercely contested 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium.

The result delivered one of the competition’s most remarkable upsets, with Fleetwood, a League Two club, overcoming opponents ranked 84 places above them in the English football league system to secure a historic place in the quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history.

Fleetwood made their intentions clear early in the encounter, refusing to be intimidated by Arsenal’s superior resources and reputation. The hosts took a shock lead in the 21st minute when Aaron Loupalo-Bi found the net, capitalising on an opportunity to put the underdogs ahead against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal struggled to break through Fleetwood’s organised defensive structure during the first half, despite fielding an attacking line-up that included Viktor Gyökeres and Kai Havertz. The hosts maintained their discipline and carried their advantage into the interval, leaving the visitors with considerable work to do after the restart.

The Gunners eventually restored parity five minutes into the second half. Gyökeres scored in the 50th minute after a move involving teenage Arsenal debutant Ceadach O’Neill, bringing the visitors back into the contest and raising hopes that their attacking quality would eventually settle the tie.

Arsenal subsequently increased the pressure and created several opportunities to take the lead, but Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch produced crucial saves to keep his side in contention. The hosts remained resilient under sustained pressure, refusing to surrender despite the gulf in league status between the teams.

The contest took another dramatic turn late in regulation time when Arsenal teenager Max Dowman was sent off following an incident involving Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal. The dismissal reduced Arsenal to 10 men and complicated their efforts to find a decisive goal before the final whistle.

Lynch then delivered another outstanding intervention in stoppage time, denying Arsenal’s attempts to snatch victory and ensuring the tie proceeded to penalties. His performance proved pivotal as Fleetwood seized the opportunity to complete an extraordinary cup triumph in front of their home supporters.

In the shootout, Fleetwood converted all five of their penalties, demonstrating composure under intense pressure. Arsenal’s Bruno Guimarães saw his effort saved by Lynch, leaving the hosts on the brink of qualification before Conor Haughey converted the decisive kick to seal the 5-3 victory.

The defeat ended Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Carabao Cup this season, while Fleetwood advanced to the quarter-finals and celebrated a landmark achievement in their history. The result also underlined the unpredictable nature of knockout football, where defensive resolve, goalkeeping excellence and composure from the penalty spot can overturn even the most pronounced differences in status.
