The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert warning Nigerians to brace for thunderstorms, rainfall, and strong winds expected to affect several parts of the country on Monday, April 13.
According to the agency, the forecast indicates that both northern and southern regions will experience varying degrees of weather intensity, with early morning thunderstorms predicted in parts of the North, followed by more widespread rainfall and gusty winds as the day progresses.
NiMet specifically highlighted the risk of strong winds preceding the rains, a condition that could pose hazards such as falling trees, weak structures collapsing, and reduced visibility for motorists and air transport operators.
The agency urged residents to take precautionary measures, advising the public to avoid sheltering under trees during storms, secure loose outdoor items, and exercise caution while driving. Airline operators were also advised to obtain updated weather reports for safe flight planning.
In addition, NiMet cautioned that heavy rainfall in some areas could lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying communities and regions with poor drainage systems. Residents in such areas were encouraged to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring of weather patterns and called on the public to stay informed through its official channels for timely updates.
This latest advisory comes as Nigeria continues to experience seasonal weather transitions, typically marked by increased rainfall and storm activity across different regions.
