In a weather update released from Abuja, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast sunny skies combined with hazy conditions across the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
For the northern region, including states such as Katsina, Yobe, Kano and Jigawa, NiMet anticipates bright, sunny conditions in the morning hours for Sunday, with hazy atmospheres expected to linger.
In the central belt, states such as Benue and Kogi are expected to experience sunshine and some cloud cover through the morning, but isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains may develop in the afternoon or evening.
The southern region is forecast to see more dynamic conditions, cloudy skies in the morning, with the likelihood of morning showers in places like Lagos, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, followed by moderate thunderstorms later in the day in many coastal and inland states.
As the forecast rolls into Monday and Tuesday, the northern region should remain largely sunny. The central states will continue to see a mix of sunshine and patchy cloud cover, while the southern region remains prone to showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon.
In the north, hazy conditions can reduce visibility, affecting drivers, aviation operations, and those with respiratory conditions. NiMet has therefore issued guidance in previous haze-related forecasts.
In the Agricultural industry, farmers should be cautious about applying fertilisers or pesticides just before anticipated rainfall. NiMet explicitly advises against this to avoid wash-offs and nutrient losses.
During thunderstorms, particularly in the south, loose objects should be secured, and electrical appliances unplugged when possible. Tall trees should be avoided during strong wind periods.
With changing weather conditions, motorists and public transport operators should exercise caution, especially during rains in central and southern states. Airlines and airports are also reminded to obtain region-specific weather advisories for flight planning.
In the north, expect bright sunshine but keep an eye on air quality and visibility due to haze.
In the central region, plan outdoor activities for the morning and check for storm forecasts later in the day.
In the south, carry an umbrella or rain jacket for afternoon or evening thunderstorms; avoid being out in open or poorly sheltered spots when storms approach.
Across all regions, be advised to stay updated via NiMet’s official channels. Ensure vulnerable groups, children, elderly, those with asthma or allergies are more closely monitored during haze or thunderstorm periods.
For the coming Sunday to Tuesday period, NiMet’s forecast underscores a theme of sunshine, haze and regional variability. Northern Nigeria will likely enjoy sun with hazy skies, the central states will engage in a sunshine-to-showers transition, and the south must stay watchful for afternoon thunderstorms. While many will enjoy bright mornings, the mid-day to evening hours present variable conditions across the country.
Stay safe, stay updated, and plan your activities mindful of these evolving weather patterns.
