The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made the preliminary register of voters for the 2027 general elections available online following concerns from Nigerians and other stakeholders over public access to the electoral document.
The commission announced the decision on Monday, October 26, 2026, explaining that the online publication would complement the physical display of the register already conducted nationwide. The move is intended to improve accessibility, promote transparency and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
In a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission said it had taken note of calls for the register to be accessible through its online platform in addition to the physical inspection exercise.
INEC said the preliminary register could now be accessed through its dedicated portal at https://display.inecnigeria.org. The online document contains the same register earlier displayed at Registration Areas across the country.
The physical display exercise took place from October 9 to 15, 2026, in accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026. It was designed to enable registered voters to verify their particulars and submit claims or objections where discrepancies or questionable entries were identified.
The decision to provide online access followed criticism over the register’s absence from the commission’s website during the scheduled inspection period. Reports had highlighted concerns that the failure to publish the document online within the stipulated period raised questions about compliance with the law and the accessibility of the electoral process.
By making the register available online, INEC is providing another channel through which eligible voters and interested stakeholders can scrutinise the document. The exercise is particularly important for identifying errors, omitted names and other discrepancies before the commission finalises the register for the elections.
The commission, however, clarified that the publication of the preliminary register does not mark the end of the verification process. It said it was continuing to process claims and objections arising from the physical display exercise in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.
INEC announced that the certification and publication of the final register of voters would take place on December 15, 2026. The final document is expected to reflect the outcome of the review process and serve as the official register for the 2027 general elections.
The development places renewed emphasis on the importance of voter verification and institutional accountability ahead of the elections. With the preliminary register now available online, registered voters are encouraged to check their details and follow INEC’s official procedures for raising complaints or seeking corrections, while the commission faces the task of ensuring that the final register is accurate, accessible and prepared in accordance with the law.
