The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the final deadline for the submission of political parties’ membership registers to May 10, 2026, offering a fresh compliance window for parties preparing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The new date replaces the earlier deadline of April 21, 2026, which had been outlined in the commission’s revised electoral timetable, and forms part of ongoing adjustments to streamline pre-election processes.
INEC’s directive requires all registered political parties to submit comprehensive and updated membership registers in digital format, in accordance with provisions of the Electoral Act guiding political party administration in Nigeria.
The submission of membership registers remains a statutory requirement, forming a critical benchmark for political parties intending to conduct primaries and field candidates in the forthcoming elections.
The initial timeline had drawn concerns from several political stakeholders who argued that the window provided was insufficient for the scale of nationwide registration, verification, and digitisation required across Nigeria’s states and the Federal Capital Territory.
