The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expelled Nafiu Bala and several other members over alleged anti-party activities, in a decisive move that underscores the party’s deepening internal crisis.
The expulsions were announced during the party’s 8th National Convention held in Abuja, where delegates also ratified the leadership of David Mark as head of the party’s National Working Committee.
According to the report of the party’s disciplinary committee presented at the convention, the affected members were accused of actions deemed detrimental to the unity and stability of the party. The committee noted that those involved had been given opportunities to reverse their conduct but failed to comply.
“Consequently, the Convention is respectfully invited to expel the above-named persons for anti-party activities,” the report stated, citing provisions of the party’s constitution that empower the convention to discipline members.
Those expelled alongside Bala include Odion Kennedy, Stella Chukwuma, and other key figures, with some reports also naming federal lawmaker Leke Abejide and additional party members linked to internal disputes.
The development is closely tied to an ongoing leadership tussle within the party. Bala, who has been associated with a rival faction, had earlier approached the courts to challenge the legitimacy of the Mark-led leadership.
Party leaders at the convention accused the expelled members of fueling divisions, creating parallel structures, and destabilising the organisation at a critical time when it seeks to consolidate its position ahead of future elections.

Despite the turmoil, the Mark-led faction used the convention to assert control, push through constitutional amendments, and signal a renewed push for unity—albeit through disciplinary measures against dissenting members.
The latest expulsions are expected to intensify the struggle for control within the party, raising further questions about its cohesion and readiness as a major opposition platform ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
