Fresh political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gathered momentum this week as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso hosted senior figures of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja, amid growing speculation of a broader opposition alliance involving Peter Obi.
The meeting, which took place at Kwankwaso’s residence in the nation’s capital, brought together key NDC stakeholders, including the party’s National Vice Chairman (North-West), Mohammed Bakin. Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that the visit formed part of ongoing efforts to reposition opposition forces ahead of the next election cycle.
Insiders revealed that NDC leaders used the engagement to formally invite Kwankwaso to align with the party, signalling a possible shift in political affiliations as timelines for party primaries draw closer.
The development comes against the backdrop of increasing calls for a unified opposition front, with both Kwankwaso and Obi widely regarded as influential political figures capable of reshaping electoral dynamics if they collaborate.
Recent reports indicate that the NDC has already extended an offer of its presidential platform to both men, urging them to consider a joint ticket arrangement within a limited timeframe tied to electoral deadlines.
Adding momentum to the coalition narrative, supporters of the two politicians have launched the “OK Movement,” a grassroots mobilisation campaign advocating a strategic alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso.

However, the evolving political landscape remains fluid. Kwankwaso is currently associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party grappling with internal leadership disputes that could influence its participation in the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has set deadlines for party submissions and candidate nominations, intensifying pressure on political actors to finalize alliances and platforms.
Analysts say the Abuja meeting underscores a broader trend of coalition-building among opposition parties seeking to consolidate strength against the ruling establishment. Whether these talks will culminate in a formal alliance between Kwankwaso and Obi remains uncertain, but the signals point to an increasingly strategic and competitive pre-election environment.
