IGP Orders Probe Into Alleged Police Link to Dadiyata’s Disappearance

Posted on May 9, 2026May 9, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on IGP Orders Probe Into Alleged Police Link to Dadiyata’s Disappearance

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed the Police Monitoring Unit to investigate allegations linking two senior police officers to the disappearance and alleged killing of missing activist and blogger, Abubakar Idris.

The officers named in the allegations are CSP Hussaini Gimba and CSP Hassan Gimba. The directive followed petitions submitted by Kano-based human rights lawyer, Abba Hikima, who called for an independent and transparent investigation into the long-running case.

According to documents acknowledged by the Force Headquarters in Abuja and dated May 8, 2026, the IGP instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Monitoring Unit to handle the matter. The acknowledgment letter, referenced CZ:7050/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.201/18, was signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IGP, CP Lateef Adio Ahmed.

The petitions were reportedly triggered by claims allegedly made by Muhammad Musa Kamarawa, a former Senior Special Assistant to former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle. Kamarawa allegedly claimed that the two officers threatened him and referenced the killing of Dadiyata and another individual identified as Saminu S/Fada Gusau.

In one of the petitions, Hikima argued that the allegations were too serious to be ignored, especially because Dadiyata’s disappearance has remained unresolved for years. He maintained that if the claims were false, a transparent investigation would clear the officers’ names, but if proven true, justice should prevail regardless of rank or influence.

Dadiyata, a lecturer and outspoken social media commentator known for his political criticism, was abducted from his residence in Barnawa, Kaduna State, in August 2019 by unidentified persons. Since then, his whereabouts have remained unknown, sparking widespread concern among civil society groups, activists and human rights organisations across Nigeria.

The latest directive from the police hierarchy is being seen as one of the strongest official steps taken so far toward reopening scrutiny into the controversial case. However, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to disclose when the investigation will formally commence or whether the officers named in the petitions will be invited for questioning.

The development has renewed public attention on the unresolved disappearance of Dadiyata, a case that has remained one of Nigeria’s most prominent unresolved human rights concerns since 2019.
