Tragedy struck a Plateau State community on New Year’s Eve as armed assailants invaded Bum village in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, leaving at least seven residents dead and several others injured.
The attack occurred late on Tuesday night, December 31, 2025, as residents were observing crossover activities to usher in the New Year. Homes were set ablaze during the assault, forcing families to flee and throwing the once-peaceful community into chaos.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, said the attackers exploited the festive atmosphere to unleash violence on the community.
According to Tengwong, the gunmen struck at about 11:00 p.m., just as residents were preparing to bid farewell to 2025, turning a night meant for celebration into one of grief and devastation.
He disclosed that seven bodies had been recovered as of Thursday morning, noting that search and rescue operations were still ongoing, with fears that the death toll could rise.
Tengwong further revealed that the attack happened despite prior security warnings indicating that some communities in Jos South Local Government Area were at risk of нападение, lamenting that the alerts were allegedly not acted upon.
He described the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of violent attacks on rural communities across Plateau State, raising fresh concerns about the safety of lives and property, particularly during festive periods traditionally associated with peace and unity.
The Berom Youths Moulder-Association expressed deep concern over the renewed violence and stated that it was closely following developments, promising to provide updates as more information becomes available.
