Nigerian security agencies have arrested seven suspected senior members of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) upon their return from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
The disclosure was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who said the suspects were apprehended at Katsina Airport on Thursday before being handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation.
According to the minister, the arrests were made possible through enhanced intelligence sharing and the integration of Nigeria’s identity management and border control systems, which have strengthened the country’s ability to identify persons of security interest at entry points.
Tunji-Ojo explained that the seven suspects were recognised as known commanders linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP while returning from Mecca, describing the operation as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
The minister made the revelation during an event marking the signing of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 into law by President Bola Tinubu. He said the integration of the National Identity Management Commission database with the Nigeria Immigration Service and international security platforms has significantly improved the country’s capacity to detect and intercept high-risk individuals.
Authorities have not released the identities of the suspects or provided details on whether they had been under surveillance before travelling for the pilgrimage. They also did not disclose whether formal charges have been filed, noting that investigations remain ongoing.
Security experts say the arrests underscore the growing importance of biometric identity verification, intelligence coordination and international cooperation in combating terrorism and preventing suspected extremists from moving undetected across borders.
The development comes as Nigerian security agencies continue sustained operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in the North-East and other parts of the country.
