Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced a major nationwide security operation ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities, with the deployment of additional troops, special forces and fighter jets to safeguard lives and property across the country. The move forms part of heightened measures to ensure a peaceful yuletide celebration for citizens.
According to the DHQ, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have placed all formations on high alert, strengthening security presence in major cities, border areas, highways, places of worship and other public spaces expected to witness increased human traffic during the festive period.
The security operation includes the deployment of combat-ready troops and special forces to identified flashpoints, alongside intensified patrols and checkpoints aimed at deterring criminal activities such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery.
In addition to ground operations, the Nigerian Air Force has deployed air assets, including fighter jets, helicopters and surveillance aircraft, to provide aerial support and rapid response capabilities. These air operations are designed to enhance intelligence gathering, monitor suspicious movements and swiftly neutralise threats when necessary.
The DHQ explained that the decision to scale up security was informed by intelligence assessments and the need to sustain recent gains recorded by the military against insurgents and other criminal elements across different theatres of operation.
As part of the strategy, the military is working closely with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to ensure seamless coordination and information sharing nationwide.
The Federal Government has also directed all security agencies to maintain round-the-clock vigilance throughout the festive season, with particular attention to airports, motor parks, border crossings, markets and recreational centres.
The Defence Headquarters reassured Nigerians that the military remains committed to protecting the country’s sovereignty and maintaining internal security, stressing that all deployed personnel have been given clear rules of engagement to act professionally while respecting citizens’ rights.
Members of the public have been urged to remain calm, go about their lawful activities and cooperate with security operatives by reporting suspicious movements or activities through established channels.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, extended goodwill messages to Nigerians, assuring them that the armed forces will continue to work tirelessly to ensure a safe, peaceful and hitch-free Christmas and New Year celebration across the nation.
