Nigeria’s electoral roll has received a significant boost as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that more than 3.4 million new voters have been captured in its ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
According to the commission’s latest update released in Abuja, a total of 3,441,121 Nigerians successfully completed their voter registration during the second phase of the exercise as of early April 2026. The figure includes both online pre-registrations and physical, in-person enrolments across registration centres nationwide.
A breakdown of the data shows that 2,068,384 registrants completed their process online, while 1,372,737 others registered physically, reflecting a growing adoption of digital registration channels alongside traditional methods.
Demographically, the exercise has been largely driven by young Nigerians. INEC disclosed that individuals aged 18 to 34 accounted for 68.43% of the total registrations, underscoring increased youth participation ahead of future elections.
Gender distribution also tilted in favour of women, who made up 55.86% (1,922,143) of new registrants, compared to 44.14% (1,518,978) recorded for men.
In terms of occupational spread, students emerged as the largest bloc among newly registered voters, followed by individuals engaged in business and those in agriculture-related activities such as farming and fishing. The data further indicated that 48,330 persons with disabilities were successfully registered, highlighting efforts toward inclusivity in the electoral process.
State-by-state figures show northern and urban centres leading the exercise, with Jigawa State recording the highest number of new voters, followed by Lagos and Kano.
INEC clarified that the current figures remain provisional, pending data clean-up processes, including verification and removal of duplicate or invalid entries through its biometric identification system.
The commission reiterated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral integrity, urging eligible citizens yet to register to take advantage of the ongoing exercise through its official portals and designated centres nationwide.
The CVR exercise forms a critical part of preparations for upcoming off-cycle elections and the 2027 general elections, as INEC continues efforts to expand voter participation and enhance the credibility of the country’s democratic process.
