NOSE BLEEDS: Causes, Treatment, Prevention, When You Should Be Alarmed

Posted on March 16, 2025March 16, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on NOSE BLEEDS: Causes, Treatment, Prevention, When You Should Be Alarmed

Nosebleeds, also known as epistaxis, are one of those things we’ve either experienced or seen at some point.

Even though they can look alarming, most of the time they’re harmless and easy to manage.

Regardless, it’s worth knowing what causes them, how to handle them, and when to take them seriously.

WHAT IS A NOSE BLEED?

A nosebleed is when blood starts escaping from the tissues lining your nose.

It’s usually caused by the breakage of the tiny and fragile blood vessels in the nasal tract.

It comes in two main types, and they present with different levels of severity.

TYPES OF EPISTAXIS

Anterior Epistaxis: This is the most common type, where blood comes out near the nostrils.

Blood comes from the front of the nose because tiny blood vessels near the nostrils break.

It’s easy to control and usually not a big deal.

Posterior Epistaxis: We can tag this one the Very Intense Problem version.

It usually occurs deep in the back of the nose, where larger blood vessels are located.

The blood can flow down your throat and it’s more difficult to stop. You are likely to need medical help for this one.

WHY DO NOSEBLEEDS HAPPEN?

Your nose is basically like a luxury spa for air, it warms and moisturizes it before it enters your lungs.

But it comes with fragile blood vessels just under the surface.

Once exposed to dry air, irritation, or even a simple nose-pick, the vessels break, and you’re left holding tissues like it’s a tragic movie scene.

SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR

For Anterior Epistaxis: You would usually notice bright red blood dripping or flowing from your nose. You’ll know it when you see it.

For Posterior Epistaxis:

-Blood dripping into your throat.
-A bad taste in your mouth.
-Nausea (Obviously, blood isn’t smoothie).

WHAT ARE SOME POSSIBLE TRIGGERS?

Dry air: Cold, dry weather or indoor heating can dry out your nasal passages.

Nose trauma: A hit to your nose can cause bleeding. Trauma is a big trigger. Back in secondary school, people who had it experienced bleeding during sports.

Picking your nose: Yes, I see you. You need to stop that habit.

Allergies or colds: Repeated sneezing and blowing your nose too hard can wear those blood vessels down.

Medications: Blood thinners like aspirin or warfarin can make even minor bleeding worse.

Underlying conditions: From high blood pressure to conditions like leukemia or hemophilia, some medical conditions make nosebleeds more likely.

High altitudes: The air gets thinner, and your nose doesn’t enjoy it.

WHO IS AT HIGHER RISK?

Kids (2–10 years): Their little noses have fragile blood vessels and sometimes children’s fingers are usually curious to pick the nose now and then.

Pregnant women: Hormones can make nasal blood vessels extra sensitive.

People on blood thinners: Your body’s clotting game is weak and allows more bleeding.

People with blood disorders: Conditions like hemophilia mean even a small bleed can last longer.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOUR NOSE BLEEDS?

Don’t panic; It is not always as bad as it looks. Freaking out may raise your blood pressure, and that’s not helpful.

Sit up straight. Lying down could send blood to your throat.

Pinch your nostrils. Press the soft part of your nose together for 10 minutes.

Lean forward. This keeps the blood out of your throat.

Ice packs: Apply one to your nose or back of your neck, it helps constrict those vessels and reduce bleeding.

If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 20 minutes or is extra intense, seek medical help.

DIAGNOSIS?

If your nose keeps staging these dramatic episodes, see a doctor and he or she might adopt the following :

Nasal endoscopy: A fancy camera to see what’s going on inside.

CT scan or X-rays: To check for fractures or abnormalities.

Blood tests: To rule out clotting disorders or other health issues.

HOW TO PREVENT NOSEBLEEDS

Moisturize your nose: Use saline sprays or gels, especially in dry weather.

Humidify your space: Keep the air moist with a humidifier.

No more nose-picking! Seriously. Trim those nails too, especially for kids.

Be gentle: Don’t blow your nose like you’re separating it from you

Avoid irritants: Smoking, certain nasal sprays, or chemical fumes can wreak havoc.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

If prevention isn’t helping and it keeps reoccurring, treatments might include:

Cauterization: Sealing the blood vessels with heat or chemicals.

Medications: To stop the bleeding or manage underlying issues.

Surgery or ligation: For severe, recurring cases.

Lifestyle changes: Like reducing aspirin or managing high blood pressure.
