Fear has gripped the farming communities of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area in Enugu State following a wave of violence allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
At least 25 people have been killed in recent days, with many others injured, prompting desperate families to flee to neighboring states in search of safety.
Residents say the latest attacks have overwhelmed local communities, leaving behind a trail of death, displacement, and growing despair.
Eyewitness accounts and community sources describe scenes of horror in villages like Adani, where four farmers, including women and a tree feller, were slaughtered in their fields last week.
Chijindu Omeje, a resident of Adani, confirmed the killings, stating that one of the victims was his cousin’s in-law, Emenike, a man in his early 40s.
“This happened in broad daylight,” he said. “Adani to Ogurugu road is now a no-go area. Kidnappers, believed to be the same herdsmen, have taken over the road.”

Local vigilante groups, already stretched thin, are sounding the alarm and criticizing the response of state security agencies. “The incident became horrifying as the new Enugu Police Commissioner, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, last week denied publicly that there was any insecurity problem,” said Godwin Ezugwu, a member of the community’s vigilante network.
The killings have sparked outrage among locals, especially following the murder of a community vigilante member, Chijioke Anioke, and the kidnapping of a commercial driver, Patty Ozor, in which a passenger was also killed. Community leaders have called on Governor Peter Mbah to take urgent action, expressing frustration at the silence and inaction of Uzo-Uwani LGA Chairman,
