Arsenal produced a night of pure dominance at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, hammering Atlético Madrid 4–0 in a UEFA Champions League showdown that sent shockwaves through Europe.
The victory not only extended the Gunners’ unbeaten start to the campaign but also underlined their growing reputation as one of the most formidable sides in Europe this season.
The match began with Atlético showing early intent, pressing high and trying to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm. However, the North Londoners, playing with confidence and composure, gradually took control of possession. Declan Rice dictated the tempo from midfield, while Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli stretched Atlético’s rigid defence with blistering pace down both flanks.
Despite Arsenal’s early dominance, the first half ended goalless. Julián Álvarez, leading Atlético’s attack, struck the post with a thunderous effort midway through the half, while a brief lapse in concentration almost saw David Raya punished after a misplaced pass in his own box. Yet Arsenal’s backline, marshalled by William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, held firm.
The breakthrough arrived in the 57th minute when Gabriel Magalhães rose highest to meet a beautifully delivered free-kick from Declan Rice, nodding the ball past Atlético’s helpless goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
The Emirates erupted in relief and joy as the home side finally got the goal their dominance deserved.

From that moment, the Gunners shifted into overdrive. Seven minutes later, a swift counterattack started by 18-year-old prodigy Myles Lewis-Skelly carved open Atlético’s defence. The young midfielder’s quick feet and vision released Gabriel Martinelli, who curled a stunning shot into the far corner to double Arsenal’s lead.
The atmosphere inside the Emirates hit fever pitch, but the biggest roar of the night came when Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres finally opened his Arsenal account in the 67th minute. After weeks of near misses and criticism, Gyökeres latched onto a deflected effort inside the box and calmly slotted home Arsenal’s third goal, sparking wild celebrations from teammates and fans alike.
Barely three minutes later, Gyökeres struck again, this time from a set-piece melee. Rising above a crowded six-yard box, the powerful forward bundled the ball over the line to seal his brace and put the result beyond doubt.
His performance earned a standing ovation from the Arsenal faithful, who chanted his name long after the final whistle.
Speaking after the match, Mikel Arteta hailed his players’ resilience and intensity, describing Gyökeres as “phenomenal” and praising the team’s balance between creativity and discipline. “This was a complete performance,” the Arsenal boss said. “We showed maturity, energy, and hunger. Viktor has worked so hard and tonight he got his reward.”
The result means Arsenal remain top of their Champions League group with three wins from three matches and yet to concede a single goal. Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, were left shell-shocked, their unbeaten run in all competitions abruptly ended by an Arsenal side that looked sharper, hungrier, and tactically superior.
With this emphatic victory, Arsenal have sent a clear message to the rest of Europe: they are no longer just participants in the Champions League, they are serious contenders. The combination of youthful energy, tactical discipline, and attacking flair on display suggests that Mikel Arteta’s side is finally ready to chase the glory that has eluded them for nearly two decades.
