Nigeria’s electoral process for the 2027 general elections has formally begun, following the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that political parties can now commence their primary elections.
The electoral umpire confirmed that a 38-day window has been activated, within which all registered political parties are expected to conduct their primaries to nominate candidates for various elective positions. This development marks a critical milestone in the build-up to the next general elections, setting the stage for internal party contests that will determine flag bearers.
INEC’s timetable aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act, which mandates political parties to complete their primaries within a clearly defined period ahead of the main elections. The commission emphasized that adherence to the schedule is non-negotiable, warning that any party that fails to comply risks disqualification of its candidates.
The primary elections are expected to cover presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly positions. Parties are required to notify INEC ahead of their primaries to enable monitoring, as stipulated by law.
Political stakeholders across the country are already mobilizing, with aspirants intensifying consultations, alliance-building, and grassroots engagement in anticipation of the contests. The primaries are often decisive, particularly in dominant parties where winning the ticket significantly boosts chances in the general election.
INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency and strict compliance with electoral guidelines, noting that early preparations are crucial to ensuring a credible and orderly election cycle.
With this announcement, Nigeria’s political landscape enters a new phase of heightened activity, as parties begin the process of selecting candidates who will shape the nation’s leadership trajectory in 2027.
