Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation Hadin Kai have successfully foiled a coordinated terrorist attack on Kukareta community in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State, killing at least 24 insurgents and recovering a significant cache of weapons.
According to an official statement issued by the Theatre Command’s Media Information Officer, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, April 23, 2026. The assault reportedly began shortly after midnight and lasted until about 3:00 a.m., as terrorists launched a determined offensive on the community.
Military sources disclosed that troops responded swiftly with a coordinated offensive-defensive operation, effectively containing the attackers and forcing them into a chaotic retreat. The engagement resulted in heavy losses for the insurgents, with 24 confirmed killed during the encounter.
Subsequent exploitation of the battlefield led to the recovery of a large quantity of arms and ammunition. Items recovered include 18 AK-47 rifles, three General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), two PKT anti-aircraft guns, three rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes, two mortar tubes, four hand grenades, multiple magazines, and substantial quantities of 7.62mm ammunition.
Despite the successful operation, two soldiers were reported wounded in action but have since been stabilised. Additionally, one armoured vehicle deployed as reinforcement sustained damage during the firefight.
Military authorities further revealed that follow-up operations are ongoing to track fleeing terrorists, recover additional equipment, and secure the area. Blood trails and abandoned medical supplies along escape routes suggest more casualties among the retreating insurgents.
The latest operation underscores the continued efforts of Operation Hadin Kai to degrade terrorist capabilities in Nigeria’s North-East, particularly against groups linked to the long-running insurgency in the region.
