Nigeria’s football sensation, Victor Osimhen, has once again earned continental recognition after being shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), confirming the Super Eagles striker’s place among the ten finest footballers across the continent.
Osimhen’s inclusion in this elite list marks yet another milestone in his career, following an impressive run for both his club and the Nigerian national team. The Napoli forward, who previously clinched the CAF Player of the Year award in 2023, is now in contention for a second title that would further cement his legacy as one of Africa’s modern football greats.
According to CAF, the 2025 nominees were selected based on performances between January 6 and October 15, 2025, covering both club and international football. The shortlist features the continent’s biggest names, including Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Cameroon’s Frank Anguissa, and Senegal’s Pape Matar Sarr. The lineup also includes Serhou Guirassy, Denis Bouanga, Fiston Mayele, Oussama Lamlioui, and Iliman Ndiaye, completing a highly competitive field.
Osimhen’s continued dominance in Europe and Africa has kept him in the spotlight. Despite battling minor injuries earlier in the season, his consistent goal-scoring record for Napoli and leadership for Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been widely praised. His influence on the pitch through speed, physicality, and finishing, remains unmatched among African forwards.

This latest recognition also comes at a time when Nigerian football is seeking continental resurgence. With Osimhen flying the national flag high, Nigeria has reclaimed its place among countries producing world-class footballers capable of competing with Africa’s very best. His nomination is, therefore, not just a personal triumph but a national statement of excellence.
CAF revealed that the eventual winner will be determined through a voting process involving the CAF Technical and Development Committee, former players, coaches of national teams, team captains, and selected media professionals. The winner will be unveiled at the CAF Awards ceremony, whose date and venue are expected to be announced soon.
For Osimhen, the nomination represents both recognition and responsibility. Having already won once, the 26-year-old striker faces the challenge of maintaining his dominance amid rising African stars. Yet, with his work rate, passion, and proven record, few would bet against him reclaiming the top honour.
Fans and football analysts across the continent have lauded the nomination, noting that Osimhen’s journey continues to inspire young African talents. His rise from the streets of Lagos to global football fame serves as a powerful story of determination, resilience, and belief in one’s dream.
Beyond individual glory, Osimhen’s consistency underscores the growing impact of African players in global football. From leading their clubs in Europe’s top leagues to making decisive contributions for their national teams, African stars like Osimhen are reshaping global football narratives.
As the countdown to the CAF Awards begins, Nigerian fans will be hoping their talisman can once again bring home the continent’s most coveted individual accolade. Whether he wins or not, Victor Osimhen’s name remains firmly etched among the finest footballers Africa has ever produced, a symbol of excellence, hard work, and undying national pride.
