Tragedy in Niger State as Tanker Explosion Kills 39, Injures 60

Posted on October 22, 2025October 22, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Tragedy in Niger State as Tanker Explosion Kills 39, Injures 60

A devastating fuel tanker explosion has claimed at least 39 lives and left 60 others injured in Niger State, plunging the state into mourning.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Essa community along the Agaie–Bida Road in the Katcha Local Government Area when a petrol-laden tanker lost control and overturned, spilling its contents on the highway.

Eyewitnesses said residents and passersby rushed to the scene to scoop the spilled fuel before a sudden spark ignited the petrol, leading to a massive explosion that engulfed dozens of people.

The intensity of the fire spread rapidly, trapping many within seconds and destroying vehicles and roadside shops in the area.

Emergency responders from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) swiftly arrived at the scene to rescue victims and evacuate the dead.

Officials confirmed that 39 bodies had been recovered while about 60 others sustained varying degrees of burns, many of them in critical condition. Hospitals in Bida and Minna are reportedly overwhelmed as medical teams struggle to handle the influx of casualties.

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State described the incident as heartbreaking and avoidable, expressing deep sadness that such tragedies continue to recur despite numerous warnings. He appealed to citizens to desist from rushing toward accident scenes involving fuel tankers, emphasizing that lives are more precious than any quantity of petrol.

“This is a national tragedy that could have been prevented,” the governor said in a statement. “We have repeatedly cautioned our people not to endanger their lives by scooping fuel from fallen tankers, yet the warnings often go unheeded. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and the entire Essa community.”

Local officials blamed poor road conditions and the reckless driving of tanker operators for the rising number of such accidents in Niger State. Residents of Agaie–Bida Road have long complained about the deplorable state of the highway, calling on the federal and state governments to fix the route to prevent further loss of lives.

The state’s emergency management agency disclosed that efforts are ongoing to clear the debris and prevent secondary explosions, as several vehicles and motorcycles were completely burnt in the inferno.

Authorities have also launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and assess the level of damage caused.

Tuesday’s explosion adds to the growing list of deadly tanker incidents across Nigeria in recent years, highlighting the dangers of fuel transportation on poorly maintained roads. Similar explosions in Lagos, Rivers, and Delta states have claimed hundreds of lives, often triggered when people attempt to collect leaking petrol.

As rescue operations continue, the Niger State government has promised to provide medical support to survivors and relief materials to affected families. Officials are also considering stricter enforcement of road safety regulations for tanker drivers and renewed campaigns to educate residents on the dangers of approaching fuel spill scenes.
