A tragic incident has reportedly led to the deaths of over 150 suspected bandits in Sokoto State after a boat conveying them capsized along a river route in the Sabon Gida area.
According to several sources, the incident occurred when the group, believed to be fleeing or transiting through the waterway, boarded a boat that later overturned, resulting in mass drowning.
While full operational details remain limited, the development is understood to be linked to ongoing security pressure in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where military offensives and local resistance have forced armed groups to adopt unconventional escape routes, including waterways.
Security sources cited in reports indicate that the victims were suspected bandits, involved in kidnapping, village raids, and violent attacks across states such as Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina.
The scale of the drowning underscores both the intensity of the security situation and the risks associated with irregular movements by such groups. Boat accidents themselves are not uncommon in northern Nigeria, especially in rural areas where waterways serve as transport alternatives due to poor road infrastructure and limited accessibility.
Although authorities are yet to release an official casualty breakdown or confirm identities, the reported figure, over 150 fatalities marks one of the deadliest single-incident losses involving suspected bandits in recent times.
