Former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected the outcome of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries, describing the results announced by the party as “concocted” and lacking credibility.
In a strongly worded statement issued after the exercise, Amaechi alleged that widespread voter disenfranchisement marred the primaries across several parts of the country, insisting that the process fell far short of the democratic standards the party claimed to represent.
The former presidential aspirant said he had earlier made it clear that he would only accept the outcome of the primaries if the exercise was conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
“I unequivocally reject the concocted results being announced,” Amaechi declared, maintaining that the process failed to reflect the ideals upon which the ADC was positioned as an alternative political platform for Nigerians.
According to him, a significant percentage of party members were allegedly denied the opportunity to participate in the exercise, questioning the legitimacy of the outcome.
“There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results,” he stated.
Amaechi further accused the party leadership of engaging in the same electoral malpractices it had consistently condemned in Nigeria’s political system, including vote buying, rigging, and manipulation of results.
He argued that the ADC risked losing moral authority to criticize the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission if it failed to uphold internal democracy during its own primary elections.
“A party that criticizes the ruling APC and INEC for vote buying, rigging and writing of results, cannot be engaged in vote buying, writing of results, and other electoral malpractices,” Amaechi said.
The former Rivers governor stressed that the ADC was created to provide a credible alternative capable of amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians irrespective of ethnic, religious, or social background, adding that the alleged irregularities undermined that vision.
His rejection of the results is expected to heighten tensions within the party and could trigger fresh debates over the credibility of internal democratic processes ahead of the next general election cycle.
