Turaki Vows to End Impunity as New PDP Chairman Takes Charge

Posted on November 16, 2025November 16, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Turaki Vows to End Impunity as New PDP Chairman Takes Charge

Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, the newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has pledged to end the culture of impunity within the party and restore internal discipline as the opposition group begins a new leadership era. His commitment came shortly after he was declared winner at the party’s national convention held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The convention, which took place at the Adamasingba Stadium, brought together delegates from across the country, marking one of the party’s most anticipated gatherings in recent years. Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, secured an overwhelming 1,516 votes, reaffirming his wide acceptance among party stakeholders.

In his first public remarks as chairman, Turaki said the PDP must return to its foundational values, emphasizing that only a disciplined party can win back the trust of Nigerians. He described his emergence as a call to duty and promised that no individual, regardless of status, would be allowed to undermine party structures or processes.

He noted that years of internal crises and unchecked misconduct had weakened the party in several states, a situation he vowed to correct through firm leadership and consistent enforcement of party guidelines. According to him, the time has come for the PDP to “belong to its members again,” with every decision reflecting collective interest rather than personal ambitions.

Turaki outlined reconciliation as one of his immediate priorities, especially in chapters plagued by factional disputes. He stressed that healing old wounds and building unity would be essential to repositioning the party ahead of upcoming elections. He also assured aggrieved members that the new leadership would operate an open-door policy.

Party stalwarts, including governors, senators, and former officeholders, welcomed Turaki’s emergence, describing it as a chance to rebuild the PDP into a more formidable opposition. Many expressed confidence in his administrative experience and political maturity, saying he is well-positioned to steer the party toward stability.

The peaceful and orderly conduct of the convention drew praise from delegates, who said it signaled a renewed commitment to democratic culture within the party. Observers noted that the exercise stood out as one of the most coordinated in recent years, reflecting a collective desire for change.

Turaki, however, urged members to remain patient as reforms will require time, cooperation, and sacrifice. He insisted that a more disciplined PDP would be better equipped to contest and win future elections, noting that internal organization is the foundation of electoral success.

He added that the new National Working Committee will prioritize grassroots empowerment, explaining that the party becomes strongest when its base is active, informed, and fully engaged. Strengthening local structures, he said, would be central to the PDP’s strategy moving forward.

With his declaration that “there will be no more impunity in PDP,” Turaki has set the tone for what many expect to be a decisive leadership phase. As the party steps into a new chapter, the coming months will determine how effectively the new chairman can translate his promises into meaningful internal transformation.
