Ilorin, Kwara State – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has held its long-anticipated State Congress in Ilorin culminating in the election of a fresh slate of state executives poised to steer the the party’s affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At the congress, Adamu Bawa was elected unopposed as the new State Chairman of Kwara PDP. Bawa, who contested the senatorial seat for Kwara North in the 2023 elections, secured broad support within the party.
Other key officers elected include:
AbdulRahman Abdullahi Kayode as State Secretary and
Olusegun Adewara as Publicity Secretary.
In his acceptance remarks, Bawa pledged to work inclusively with stakeholders, reposition the party, and mobilize for victory in 2027.
Tone of the Congress:
Peaceful, Democratic, Critically Reflective
The congress was widely praised for its calm, orderly execution and its demonstration of internal democracy. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, speaking at the event, commended members for their maturity and fairness in the conduct of the exercise. He argued that the level playing field and transparent process showcased PDP’s commitment to democratic principles.
Saraki, however, also used the occasion to denounce the state government’s handling of security challenges. Citing recent incidents, he claimed more than 70 people have died, over 50 injured, and dozens kidnapped in the past six months under the current administration.
He warned that silence in face of insecurity would be dangerous and appealed for increased accountability in governance.
The outgoing state chairman, Babatunde Mohammed, reassured party faithfuls that the PDP in Kwara remained resolute, unified, and primed to mount a strong challenge to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
With the new leadership now installed, attention will shift to organizing the party base, rallying grassroots support, and mapping strategic alliances in preparation for the 2027 exercise. The smooth conduct of the congress may also enhance PDP’s credibility in Kwara as it seeks to present itself as an effective alternative to the incumbent administration.
The new leaders have signaled willingness to engage all organs of the party, from ward to council levels, in rebuilding and consolidating party structures across the state.
