NNPC Hikes Petrol Prices to N835 in Lagos and 839 in Abuja Amid Market Pressures

Posted on January 28, 2026January 28, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on NNPC Hikes Petrol Prices to N835 in Lagos and 839 in Abuja Amid Market Pressures

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced a revision of petrol prices at its retail outlets, with motorists in Lagos and Abuja now paying higher rates for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). As of Wednesday, January 28, 2026, petrol sells for ₦835 per litre in Lagos and ₦839 per litre in Abuja, marking the latest adjustment in the nation’s downstream petroleum sector.

The increase reflects ongoing market dynamics affecting fuel supply and distribution across Nigeria. NNPC, as a key player in the sector, regularly reviews its pricing in response to logistics, refinery output, and prevailing market forces. Industry analysts say such adjustments are inevitable in a deregulated fuel market where ex-depot costs and operational expenditures directly influence pump prices.

Motorists in Lagos reported seeing the new rates at several NNPC stations across the city. In the nation’s capital, Abuja, similar updates have been confirmed at multiple retail outlets, indicating that the price revision is consistent across major urban centers. Observers note that while these rates are officially set by NNPC, other marketers often adjust their prices in parallel to remain competitive.

The latest adjustment represents a noticeable increase compared to previous figures. Lagos drivers are now paying a higher amount per litre than in previous weeks, while Abuja motorists face a slightly steeper rate. This development is likely to affect transport costs, with commercial drivers and logistics operators potentially passing the higher fuel expenses on to consumers.

Experts attribute the hike to broader market forces, including supply chain costs and fluctuations in petroleum product availability. Although NNPC has not issued an official policy statement alongside the price change, market watchers suggest that rising operational costs and the dynamics of downstream petroleum distribution play a central role in shaping pump prices.

The ripple effect of rising petrol prices extends beyond individual motorists. Transport fares, goods delivery costs, and general business expenses are expected to increase as fuel remains a key component in the country’s economic activity. Households that rely on private transportation may also feel the pinch in the weeks ahead.

This adjustment continues a trend seen throughout 2025, when petrol prices at NNPC stations fluctuated several times due to similar market considerations. The company’s pricing strategy is closely watched by competitors, including private marketers and independent retailers, which often mirror NNPC’s rates to maintain market stability.

Industry insiders note that Nigeria’s fuel market remains sensitive to both domestic and international factors. Refinery operations, import logistics, foreign exchange rates, and global oil price movements all contribute to the complex equation that determines final pump prices. In this context, price adjustments by NNPC are part of a larger economic pattern impacting the downstream petroleum sector.

Consumers are advised to monitor pricing trends and plan accordingly, especially in cities where fuel demand is high. While NNPC’s retail network provides a reliable gauge for the official selling prices.
