Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State on Tuesday 9th December stunned political watchers by formally declaring his defection from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to Accord Party. The announcement was made at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Osogbo, in the presence of national and state leaders of Accord and top government officials.
In a statement posted on his X account, Adeleke described Accord as “our new platform for the good people of Osun State, from Osun West to Osun East to Osun Central.” He said the party’s philosophy of “welfarism” aligns with his administration’s commitment to citizens’ and workers’ welfare.

According to his spokesperson, the governor actually joined Accord on November 6, 2025, after weeks of consultations with stakeholders, though the public announcement came only this Tuesday.
Adeleke had earlier resigned from PDP. In a letter dated November 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 2, Ede North Local Government Area, he cited a protracted “crisis within the national leadership of PDP.”

Declaring his intention to vie for a second term in the August 2026 Osun governorship election, Adeleke said Accord offers him a stable, welfare-oriented platform on which to continue his governance agenda. “We are united in progress and good intentions for the good people of Osun State and Nigeria at large,” he said at the ceremony.
Observers note the timing is strategic: the race towards the 2026 election is heating up, and his defection could reshape the political dynamics in the state especially given that many lawmakers and party chieftains elected under PDP reportedly intend to remain with the party for now.
As the new chapter begins under Accord, all eyes now are on how this political realignment will impact the upcoming primary contests, and whether the governor’s move will trigger further defections or reshape loyalties in Osun’s political landscape.
