INEC Explains Legal Basis for 2027 Election Dates, Addresses Stakeholder Concerns

Posted on February 14, 2026February 14, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on INEC Explains Legal Basis for 2027 Election Dates, Addresses Stakeholder Concerns

Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has issued a formal clarification on how it determined the scheduled dates for the 2027 general elections, amid rising public debate and concerns from various stakeholders.

In a statement released on February 13, 2026, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, explained that the dates were set strictly in accordance with existing constitutional and legal requirements including the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s own Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

INEC noted that its Regulations and Guidelines, which have been in force since 2019, set the framework for when general elections must take place. According to the Commission, those rules specify:

The Presidential and National Assembly elections are to be held on the third Saturday of February in any general election year.

The Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls are scheduled to occur two weeks later.

Based on this legal framework, INEC announced the following dates:

Saturday, 20 February 2027 — Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Saturday, 6 March 2027 — Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

Stakeholder Concerns

Shortly after the announcement, some stakeholders expressed concerns about the timing, particularly its overlap with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which is widely expected to run during much of the election period. Critics argue that holding national elections during Ramadan could affect voter turnout and participation, especially among Muslim communities observing fasting and religious duties.

Among the voices calling for reconsideration was former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, who stated on social media that scheduling elections during Ramadan may present challenges for many Nigerians observing fasting and spiritual observances. He urged INEC to rethink the timetable to ensure broader participation.

Similarly, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar also called for a review of the February election date, saying it could limit inclusivity and might be insensitive to the nation’s socio-religious diversity.

INEC’s Response and Next Steps

While reaffirming that the timetable was developed lawfully and transparently, INEC acknowledged that it has taken due notice of all legitimate concerns. The Commission said it is engaging in consultations with relevant groups and may seek legislative intervention if necessary but any adjustment must remain consistent with constitutional and statutory provisions.

INEC also reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the 2027 general elections are conducted in a manner that upholds transparency, inclusivity, and credibility, pledging to keep the public informed of any further developments.
