US Military Aircraft Deliver Ammunition to Nigerian Forces in Borno as Security Cooperation Deepens

Posted on February 15, 2026February 15, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on US Military Aircraft Deliver Ammunition to Nigerian Forces in Borno as Security Cooperation Deepens

At least three United States military aircraft have landed in Nigeria, touching down at military bases in Borno State and other northeastern regions between Thursday and Friday, in what defence sources say is a significant logistical support mission for Nigerian forces. The aircraft were reported to be carrying ammunition supplied by the American government, aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s fight against persistent insurgent violence in the northeast.

Senior officers at the Defence Headquarters confirmed to local media that the ammunition deliveries form part of ongoing bilateral engagements between Nigeria and the United States on security cooperation. The unnamed officers indicated that the supplies were meant to replenish military stocks following sustained operations against extremist groups that have long plagued the region.

According to reports, one of the aircraft landed at Maiduguri Airbase, the capital of Borno State, on Thursday night, with at least three US planes visible on the tarmac by Friday evening. Equipment and ammunition were reportedly being offloaded from the transport aircraft, signalling a significant logistical effort.

Eyewitness and social media accounts tracked by defence observers suggested that one of the aircraft was a C-130J-30 cargo plane and others were of the C-17 transport type, commonly used by the US Air Force for large-scale logistics missions. One social media post also noted a C-130J landing at Kaduna International Airport, fuelling speculation that the facility could serve as a training hub for US personnel assisting Nigerian forces.

Defence officials who spoke on condition of anonymity emphasised that this mission was not a combat deployment by US troops but a logistical support operation. They noted that ammunition is frequently replenished after extensive field operations, especially in high-intensity conflict zones such as Borno where Nigerian forces are engaged in counter-insurgency.

This ammunition delivery comes amid a broader scaling-up of US involvement in Nigeria’s security landscape. In recent days, Reuters and Associated Press reports have highlighted plans for the deployment of around 200 US troops to Nigeria in advisory, intelligence and training roles. These personnel are expected to assist the Nigerian military with technical support rather than direct combat, under bilateral agreements aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness against extremist threats.

Analysts say the presence of US aircraft and personnel reflects deepening strategic cooperation between Abuja and Washington, particularly as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) continue to launch attacks across northeastern Nigeria. These groups have been responsible for years of violence, displacement and disruption in Borno and neighbouring states, making external support a focus of Nigerian defence planners.

While some local defence observers view the ammunition deliveries as essential operational support, the increased presence of foreign military assets has also raised questions about sovereignty and command coordination. Nigerian authorities maintain that all support is coordinated under national security frameworks and that Nigerian forces retain full operational control.

The timing of the deliveries follows recent upticks in militant attacks in the northeast and comes as both governments seek to demonstrate a more coordinated response to insecurity. The Nigerian military has been engaged in sustained operations under Operation HADIN KAI and other initiatives to push back extremist footholds, but challenges remain amidst resource constraints and complex terrain.

As more US equipment and personnel arrive in Nigeria in the coming weeks, security analysts say the focus will be on enhancing training, intelligence sharing and tactical capacities of Nigerian forces, while efforts continue to mitigate the relentless insurgent threat in the northeast.
