NCC Orders Telcos to Compensate Subscribers with Airtime for Poor Network Service

Posted on March 30, 2026March 30, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on NCC Orders Telcos to Compensate Subscribers with Airtime for Poor Network Service

Nigeria’s telecommunications regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has directed mobile network operators (MNOs) to compensate subscribers who experience poor network service, in a significant policy shift aimed at strengthening consumer protection and industry accountability.

The directive, announced on March 29, 2026, mandates telecom operators to provide compensation to users in locations where service quality falls below the Commission’s prescribed standards.

According to the NCC, affected subscribers will receive compensation in the form of airtime credits. These credits will be calculated based on users’ average spending patterns and their presence within specific local government areas where service disruptions occur.

The Commission emphasized that consumers should no longer bear the consequences of poor service delivery. It stated that operators who fail to meet established Quality of Service (QoS) Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will be held directly accountable through this compensation framework.

Describing the move as part of a broader regulatory philosophy, the NCC noted that the new approach places subscribers at the centre of Nigeria’s telecommunications ecosystem. It also marks a shift from the traditional reliance on fines as the primary enforcement mechanism to a more consumer-focused restitution model.

The regulator highlighted the far-reaching impact of poor telecom services, noting that disruptions affect not only communication but also economic productivity, commercial activities, and public confidence in the digital economy.

In addition to targeting mobile operators, the NCC also directed tower companies—responsible for critical infrastructure such as telecom masts—to reinvest fines imposed on them into measurable network improvements. This is intended to enhance service quality, expand capacity, and strengthen overall network resilience.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing service standards and ensuring sustained investment in infrastructure, stressing that the directive is part of ongoing efforts to promote transparency, fairness, and reliability across Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

While the policy has been widely welcomed by subscribers and industry stakeholders, questions remain about its implementation and enforcement, particularly regarding how compensation eligibility will be monitored and verified across affected regions.

The development signals a more assertive regulatory stance by the NCC, positioning consumer experience as a central metric in evaluating telecom operators’ performance in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital landscape.
