Northern CAN Urges Christians to Defend Themselves Amid Persistent Attacks, Calls for Restraint

Posted on April 4, 2026April 4, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Northern CAN Urges Christians to Defend Themselves Amid Persistent Attacks, Calls for Restraint

The Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged its members to take lawful measures to defend themselves in the face of what it described as persistent and troubling attacks on Christian communities across parts of Northern Nigeria.

The call comes against the backdrop of rising insecurity in the region, where churches, worshippers, and rural communities have repeatedly come under attack by armed groups, bandits, and insurgents. Recent incidents, including killings, abductions, and destruction of places of worship, have heightened fear among residents and renewed concerns over the safety of lives and property.

In its position, Northern CAN stressed that the right to self-defence should not be misconstrued as a call for retaliation or violence, but rather as a legitimate means of preserving life when faced with imminent danger. The association emphasized that “nobody has a monopoly of violence,” warning that continued attacks on peaceful communities could provoke unintended consequences if not urgently addressed.

At the same time, the body appealed to Christian youths and members nationwide to remain calm, law-abiding, and guided by wisdom, even in the face of provocation. It underscored the importance of restraint, urging adherents not to take the law into their own hands but to act within legal and moral boundaries.

Northern CAN also directed strong appeals to the Federal Government and security agencies to step up efforts in tackling insecurity. The association called for decisive action to curb the activities of bandits, terrorist groups, and other criminal elements responsible for the wave of violence across the North.

The group reiterated that the protection of lives and property remains a fundamental responsibility of government, noting that the growing sense of vulnerability among citizens, particularly in rural and faith-based communities, undermines national unity and stability.

While acknowledging that insecurity in Nigeria affects people across religious and ethnic lines, CAN maintained that repeated attacks on Christian communities in certain areas demand urgent and targeted intervention. Analysts note that the broader crisis in Northern Nigeria is driven by a mix of terrorism, banditry, and weak security infrastructure, affecting both Christians and Muslims alike.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, Northern CAN concluded by urging continued prayers, vigilance, and collective responsibility, while expressing hope that Nigeria will overcome its security challenges through effective leadership and coordinated national action.
