The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has reopened its institutional verification portal for a final round of verification before releasing student loans for the 2024/2025 academic year.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, the Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, said the portal will be active from 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, to 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
According to her, this limited reopening is meant to give tertiary institutions that are yet to complete the verification of their students one last opportunity to do so before the disbursement begins.
“Institutions are strongly advised to make use of this final opportunity. Any that fail to complete the process within the stated period will be excluded from the current loan cycle,” Oluwatuyi warned.
She noted that such failure would disqualify the affected institutions from participation and could deny their students access to the education loan scheme.
Oluwatuyi reaffirmed NELFUND’s commitment to equitable access to higher education, ensuring that no eligible Nigerian student misses out on financial aid due to institutional lapses.
To promote transparency, she announced that the Fund will publish the names of defaulting institutions once the verification window closes.
“In the interest of transparency and accountability, NELFUND will make public a list of institutions that fail to comply,” she said.
She emphasized that NELFUND remains focused on building trust, fairness, and accountability in its loan administration process, with verification serving as a safeguard against fraud and misinformation.
The institutional verification exercise is a core requirement in the NELFUND loan approval system, used to confirm student enrollment, academic records, and identity before any loan is disbursed.
Each tertiary institution is required to upload and validate its students’ data to prevent errors, duplication, or false claims. According to a NELFUND source, some institutions have experienced administrative delays and data upload issues, prompting the Fund to reopen the portal briefly.
Oluwatuyi concluded that the accuracy of the verification process ensures loans reach genuine applicants, reinforcing government efforts to make education financing more accessible to Nigerian youth.
