A major fire disaster was narrowly averted in Ilorin, Kwara State, after a fully loaded petrol tanker crashed into YTK Filling Station, opposite the Youth Camp in the Apata area of Eyenkorin, on the outskirts of the state capital.
The incident occurred at about 6:02 a.m. on Monday when the 45,000-litre tanker, bearing registration number ARP 51 XB, reportedly lost control while the driver was attempting to reposition the vehicle within the filling station’s premises.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, the truck rammed into the station’s perimeter fence, causing the tanker compartment loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to detach from the tractor head, raising fears of a massive fire outbreak.
Firefighters swiftly secured the scene and immediately commenced intensive cooling and dampening operations to eliminate possible sources of ignition. Their prompt intervention prevented the highly flammable fuel from catching fire despite the dangerous circumstances.
The spilled petrol was subsequently siphoned into another empty tanker under the close supervision of fire service personnel, bringing the emergency operation to a successful conclusion without any loss of life, injuries or fire damage.
Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed commended the professionalism and quick response of the firefighters, describing their actions as instrumental in preventing what could have become a catastrophic explosion in the busy commercial area.
He also urged tanker drivers, petroleum marketers and transport operators to strictly observe safety protocols during the transportation, parking and handling of petroleum products, stressing that compliance with established safety procedures remains the best way to prevent avoidable emergencies.
