No fewer than 11 persons have been confirmed dead after a vehicle reportedly somersaulted and plunged off a bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.
The tragic accident occurred late Sunday night, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, the lone crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle bearing registration number GGE 722 KJ.
Odunsi disclosed that the vehicle lost control, somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping all the occupants inside the wreckage after the doors reportedly locked on impact.
“All 11 people on board, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash,” the FRSC spokesperson stated.
According to the FRSC, rescue operatives from the Itori Unit Command were immediately mobilised to the scene after distress calls were received.
The operation, however, proved difficult as the victims were trapped inside the mangled vehicle. FRSC officials, alongside local residents, reportedly had to dismantle parts of the vehicle before the bodies could be recovered.
Authorities have yet to officially determine the exact cause of the crash, although preliminary findings indicated that the vehicle lost control before plunging off the bridge.
The remains of the victims have since been evacuated, while officials urged motorists to avoid speeding and reckless driving, especially during night journeys.
The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent years, with road safety authorities repeatedly warning drivers against excessive speed, dangerous overtaking and poor vehicle maintenance.
