The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were the primary causes of the fatal motor accident involving British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The incident occurred on Monday around the Sinoma area, near the Sagamu axis of Ogun State, when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua was involved in a collision with a stationary commercial truck along the busy highway.
According to preliminary findings released by the FRSC, the Lexus Jeep was travelling at a high speed when the driver attempted an unsafe overtaking manoeuvre, leading to loss of control and a subsequent crash into the parked truck.
The impact of the collision resulted in the death of two occupants at the scene, while others in the vehicle sustained varying degrees of injuries. Emergency responders were immediately deployed to the accident location.
Anthony Joshua was rescued alive from the wreckage and reportedly sustained minor injuries. He was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention by his security detail.
FRSC officials confirmed that a total of five adult males were involved in the crash. While two fatalities were recorded, at least one person was injured, and others escaped without serious harm.
The corps stated that the remains of the deceased victims were deposited at a morgue in Sagamu, while further investigations have been handed over to relevant traffic and law enforcement authorities.
Reacting to the incident, the FRSC reiterated that excessive speed and dangerous overtaking remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes in Nigeria, particularly on high-speed expressways.
The agency also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua and other injured persons a speedy recovery.
FRSC used the incident to caution motorists, especially during periods of heavy traffic, to adhere strictly to speed limits, avoid risky overtaking, and obey traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives on Nigerian roads.
