A potential catastrophe was averted in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Saturday after firefighters successfully prevented a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from exploding following a mechanical fault.
The incident occurred at about 2:31 p.m. at the Olumo Filling Station area in Oko-Olowo, along the Ilorin–Jebba Expressway, when the fully loaded tanker developed a mechanical defect that sparked a fire outbreak.
According to the Kwara State Fire Service, emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze and prevented the flames from reaching the tanker, averting what could have been a devastating explosion in the busy area.
The prompt intervention also ensured the safety of nearby residents, motorists and businesses, while preventing extensive damage to surrounding property.
Following the successful operation, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade John Olumuyiwa, commended the professionalism and courage displayed by the firefighters. He also urged operators of fuel tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles to carry out regular maintenance on their vehicles, stressing that routine mechanical checks remain essential to preventing avoidable road emergencies.
Authorities later secured the scene and brought the situation under control, restoring normalcy after eliminating the threat posed by the burning tanker.
