Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been knocked out of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after a devastating 4–0 defeat to Argentina in their Round of 16 clash on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian side, who advanced from the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams with just four points from three matches, failed to find rhythm against a dominant Argentine squad.
Argentina opened the scoring in the second minute through Alejo Sarco, setting the tone for a one-sided encounter. The South Americans doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute when Maher Carrizo curled in a stunning free kick after Nasiru Salihu committed a foul at the edge of the box.
Carrizo struck again early in the second half to make it 3–0, leaving Nigeria’s defense in disarray. The final blow came in the 66th minute when Matheus Silvetti broke free from the offside trap and slotted home a composed finish past goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.
Despite their fighting spirit throughout the tournament, the Flying Eagles were simply no match for Argentina’s fluid attacking play and clinical finishing.
With this result, Argentina secured a place in the quarterfinals and exacted revenge for their previous tournament elimination by Nigeria in the last edition of the U-20 World Cup.
