Nigeria Launches FreeTV Today, Expanding Access to Free Digital Television Nationwide

Posted on June 17, 2026June 17, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Nigeria Launches FreeTV Today, Expanding Access to Free Digital Television Nationwide

Nigeria is set to take another significant step in its digital broadcasting transition with the official launch of FreeTV, a national digital television platform designed to provide millions of households with access to free-to-air digital television services across the country.

The platform aims to expand television access by offering viewers a wider range of channels, improved picture and sound quality, and greater availability of locally produced Nigerian content without the burden of monthly subscription fees.

FreeTV forms part of Nigeria’s broader Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme, an initiative spearheaded by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to migrate the country from analogue broadcasting to digital terrestrial television. The transition is expected to enhance broadcast efficiency, improve spectrum utilization, and increase content diversity for viewers nationwide.

According to information released about the platform, households equipped with compatible digital receivers or set-top boxes will be able to access multiple television channels covering news, entertainment, sports, children’s programming, educational content, movies, music, and public service information.

Industry stakeholders believe the initiative could help bridge the entertainment and information gap for low-income households that are unable to afford recurring pay-TV subscriptions. The service is also expected to provide a stronger platform for indigenous broadcasters and content creators by increasing the visibility of Nigerian-produced programming.

The introduction of FreeTV aligns Nigeria with several countries that have adopted digital terrestrial television systems to improve public access to broadcast services. The platform is based on a free-to-air model, allowing viewers to enjoy television programming after the initial acquisition of compatible reception equipment, without ongoing monthly charges.

Media analysts say the nationwide rollout could stimulate growth in the local creative industry, encourage investment in broadcasting infrastructure, and expand audience reach for regional and community television stations.

As the service officially launches today, expectations are high that FreeTV will accelerate Nigeria’s digital broadcasting journey while providing citizens with affordable access to information, education, and entertainment.

The launch represents a major milestone in the country’s long-running digital migration programme and underscores efforts to make quality television services more accessible to Nigerians regardless of income level or geographic location.
