Five young miners have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack by suspected bandits on a mining site in Gero Village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, further highlighting the persistent security challenges confronting communities in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
According to reports, the gunmen stormed the mining site at about 3:00 p.m. while local youths were engaged in mining activities. Witnesses said the attackers opened fire on the miners without warning, killing five people on the spot and leaving several others injured.
Residents of the area described the attack as sudden and devastating. A local source disclosed that the victims were carrying out their normal activities when the assailants invaded the site and unleashed gunfire. The attack reportedly took place only hours after another security incident was reported around the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) community in Kuru, located a few kilometres from Gero Village.
The latest killings have sparked renewed concerns over the safety of mining communities in Plateau State, where illegal mining, communal tensions, and banditry have increasingly intersected to create a volatile security environment. The state has witnessed a series of violent incidents in recent months, with both rural communities and mining settlements frequently targeted by armed groups.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not released an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the attack or confirming whether arrests had been made. However, residents have called on authorities to strengthen security patrols around vulnerable communities and mining locations to prevent further loss of lives.
The incident adds to the growing list of security-related attacks in Plateau State, where communities continue to grapple with threats ranging from banditry and kidnappings to attacks on farming and mining settlements. Observers say enhanced intelligence gathering, stronger security presence, and community engagement will be critical to curbing the recurring violence.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the attack while efforts are underway to provide medical care to those injured during the assault.
