US Removes 12-Year Security Hurdle on Nigerian Ships, Boosting Maritime Sector

Posted on August 19, 2026August 19, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on US Removes 12-Year Security Hurdle on Nigerian Ships, Boosting Maritime Sector

The United States Coast Guard has lifted a 12-year-old security restriction on vessels arriving in the United States from Nigeria, a move expected to reduce shipping costs, improve vessel turnaround times and strengthen the competitiveness of Nigerian ports.

Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced the development on Tuesday, describing it as a major milestone for the country’s maritime industry. The decision brings an end to enhanced security requirements that had affected vessels calling at designated Nigerian ports since 2014.

The restriction, known as the Condition of Entry (CoE), took effect on June 25, 2014. Under the arrangement, vessels destined for the United States that had called at designated Nigerian ports within their previous five port calls were subjected to additional security measures and enhanced scrutiny before entering US waters.

The United States’ decision followed sustained efforts by Nigerian authorities to strengthen maritime security and improve compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The government said the progress was achieved through collaboration involving the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), port and terminal operators, shipping companies and other stakeholders.

According to Oyetola, the US Coast Guard conducted four comprehensive assessments of Nigeria’s national maritime security framework and port facilities between 2024 and 2026. The assessments were carried out in March 2024, April 2024, March 2025 and April 2026.

The assessments reportedly showed significant improvements in Nigeria’s maritime security performance and implementation of the ISPS Code. Those findings ultimately paved the way for the removal of the Condition of Entry, according to the minister.

The lifting of the restriction is expected to have practical implications for shipping companies operating between Nigeria and the United States. With additional security procedures removed, affected vessels could face fewer delays and lower costs associated with extra documentation, inspections and security measures.

The development could also improve the attractiveness of Nigerian ports to international shipping operators. Reuters reported that the Nigerian government expects the change to help reduce shipping costs and enhance the competitiveness of the country’s ports within the international maritime market.

Oyetola said the development represents an affirmation of the progress made by Nigeria in strengthening its maritime security architecture. He also credited NIMASA and other stakeholders for sustained regulatory oversight, institutional cooperation and investments aimed at closing identified security gaps.

The minister stressed that the achievement must be sustained rather than treated as the conclusion of Nigeria’s maritime-security efforts. Maintaining compliance with international standards will remain important as Nigeria seeks to attract more international shipping activity and establish its ports as safe, efficient and competitive gateways for global trade.

For Nigeria’s maritime sector, the removal of the 12-year Condition of Entry represents more than the elimination of an additional layer of inspection. It signals improved confidence in the country’s port-security framework and could provide a boost to shipping efficiency, trade competitiveness and the broader development of the nation’s blue economy.
