Atiku’s US Lobbyist: Court Record Reveals 2003 Assault Conviction

Posted on September 21, 2026September 21, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Atiku’s US Lobbyist: Court Record Reveals 2003 Assault Conviction

A United States court record has revealed that Karl Von Batten, the Washington-based lobbyist hired by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, was convicted in 2003 after a physical assault involving his then-girlfriend.

The conviction, handed down on December 10, 2003, is contained in the record of a case before the District of Columbia courts. In the court document, the man now identified as Karl Von Batten was named Karl M.E. Okeke.

The case has resurfaced as scrutiny intensifies around Von Batten’s role as Atiku’s United States lobbyist and his background. Atiku engaged Von Batten-Montague-York, a Washington-based lobbying firm founded by Von Batten, in April 2026 under a reported annual contract of $1.2 million.

But behind the multimillion-dollar political lobbying assignment is a court record dating back more than two decades.

According to the District of Columbia Court of Appeals judgment, Von Batten, then identified as Okeke, was involved in a violent confrontation with Cynthia D. Murphy, his girlfriend at the time, at his Washington apartment on July 4, 2003.

The court record states that the relationship had deteriorated before the incident. During a Fourth of July gathering, Murphy reportedly learned that Okeke had been sexually involved with his roommate. An argument followed, after which the confrontation escalated into a physical attack.

The appellate judgment describes Murphy being dragged by her arms and legs, struck repeatedly in the face, kicked and pushed against a wall. The court record further states that she eventually escaped through a bedroom window onto an outside ledge because she feared the assault would continue. Neighbours subsequently helped her down before she received medical treatment.

This was not merely an allegation that remained unresolved. The court record states that following a misdemeanor bench trial, Okeke was convicted and sentenced to 180 days in jail for the July 4 assault. The sentence was suspended, however, and he was placed on one year’s probation.

The punishment also came with specific conditions. The court ordered him to stay away from Murphy, complete 50 hours of community service, participate in a domestic-violence counselling programme and contribute to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund.

The identity trail is now a significant part of the story. The 2008 appellate case is officially listed by the District of Columbia Courts as Murphy v. Okeke, while current reporting identifies the Washington lobbyist as Karl Von Batten. TheCable reported that correspondence sent to Von Batten seeking his response to the conviction had not received a reply when its report was filed.

The 2008 appeal itself was not an appeal against the assault conviction. It concerned civil protection orders arising from the dispute between Murphy and Okeke. The appellate court ultimately ordered that the protection order against Murphy be vacated while separately addressing a contempt finding against her.

The significance of the old conviction now lies in the public record surrounding a lobbyist operating in the middle of Nigeria’s increasingly consequential political engagement with Washington. The court documents establish the 2003 conviction under the name Karl M.E. Okeke; current reporting identifies that individual as Karl Von Batten. Any further questions about the circumstances of his name changes or professional history require separate documentary evidence.

For Atiku, whose political interests are being represented in Washington through Von Batten’s firm, the revelation adds a new layer to scrutiny of the person entrusted with that assignment. For the lobbyist himself, the 2003 conviction is a documented part of the court record, regardless of the political arguments now being made around his current activities.
