Flamingos Make History, Stun Brazil to Reach First-Ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Final

Posted on November 5, 2026November 5, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Flamingos Make History, Stun Brazil to Reach First-Ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Final

Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured a historic place in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Brazil in a thrilling semi-final encounter, marking a major milestone in the country’s youth women’s football history.

The victory sends the Nigerian youngsters into their first-ever final of the competition, bringing them within one match of claiming the prestigious global title and further strengthening Nigeria’s reputation as a force in women’s youth football.

The semi-final, played on Wednesday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, ended goalless at half-time despite Nigeria creating several promising opportunities. The Flamingos, however, returned from the break with renewed attacking purpose and eventually broke Brazil’s resistance in the 56th minute.

Queen Joseph opened the scoring after connecting with a pass from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, giving Nigeria the breakthrough their first-half pressure had failed to produce. The goal provided the Flamingos with a valuable advantage and shifted the momentum firmly in their favour.

Nigeria doubled their lead in the 71st minute through Awawu Bashiru, who converted an opportunity created by Queen Joseph. The goal further exposed Brazil’s defensive difficulties as the South Americans struggled to contain the Nigerian side’s attacking movements.

Bashiru completed her brace in the 80th minute, finishing off an assist from Oluebube Umejiaku to extend Nigeria’s advantage to 3-0. Her double proved decisive in a match that saw the Flamingos demonstrate their attacking efficiency against one of the tournament’s established contenders.

Brazil managed to reduce the deficit in the 89th minute when Greise Kelly scored from an assist by Yasmin Queiroz. However, the late goal could not change the outcome as Nigeria maintained their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.

The victory represents a significant turnaround for the Flamingos, who began their Morocco 2026 campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland. They subsequently recovered with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before defeating defending champions North Korea 3-1 to complete their group-stage fixtures with six points and finish second in Group B.

Nigeria continued their impressive run in the knockout stages with a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the round of 16 before edging Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals. Captain Azeezat Oduntan converted an 89th-minute penalty against Venezuela to secure the team’s passage into the semi-finals and set up the decisive encounter with Brazil.

The achievement surpasses the Flamingos’ previous best performance at the competition, when they finished third at the 2022 edition in India after defeating Germany in the bronze-medal match. Their latest accomplishment also gives Nigeria an opportunity to compete for the global youth women’s football title for the first time.

The Flamingos will face Japan in Saturday’s final after the Asian side eliminated defending champions North Korea in the other semi-final. Japan forced a 1-1 draw through a late equaliser before winning 4-1 on penalties to secure their place in the title-deciding encounter.

Head coach Akeem Busari and his players will now turn their attention to the November 7 final, where Nigeria will seek to convert their historic qualification into a maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title. A victory would also make Nigeria the first African country to win the competition.
