World class football team manager, José Mourinho has opened up on the reasons behind his return to Real Madrid, saying his decision was driven by his deep affection for the club and its unique place in world football.
Speaking in his first major interview since being confirmed as Real Madrid manager for a second spell, the Portuguese coach said the club’s history, legacy and global stature were key factors in convincing him to return to the Santiago Bernabéu. Mourinho described Real Madrid as more than just a football team, calling it a symbol of excellence and success in the sport.
The 63-year-old, who previously managed the Spanish giants between 2010 and 2013, said he still holds a strong emotional connection to the club. While acknowledging that Real Madrid is currently going through a challenging period, he expressed confidence that the team can return to the summit of European football.
Mourinho emphasized that his immediate focus will be on understanding the squad, listening to players and staff, and helping the team improve rather than making quick judgments. He also highlighted his desire to support key players, including Kylian Mbappé, whom he described as a world-class talent capable of reaching even greater heights.
Addressing the intense rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona, Mourinho insisted he harbors no resentment toward the Catalan club despite the fierce battles that defined much of his first spell in Spain. He said his return was motivated by his love for Real Madrid rather than any desire to rekindle old rivalries.
Real Madrid officially confirmed Mourinho’s appointment earlier this month, bringing him back to the club 13 years after his departure. Club president Florentino Pérez has tasked the veteran coach with restoring discipline and delivering silverware after a difficult campaign that saw the team finish without a major trophy.
During his first tenure, Mourinho won a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup, while helping Real Madrid re-establish itself as a dominant force in Spain and Europe. His return is widely viewed as an attempt to usher in a new era of competitiveness and stability at the club.
